Już na “Ember to Inferno” Trivium pokazali, że chcą wymyślić coś nowego, lepiąc w jedno elementy klasycznego metalu, bardziej nowoczesne podejście do gatunku i nadając temu autorski twist. Jednocześnie słychać, że na debiucie jeszcze nie ukształtowali swojego języka. Mieli na siebie pomysł, ale potrzebowali czasu, by go w pełni zrealizować. Dwa lata później ukazało się “Ascendancy” i bum! – Trivium stał się w pełni samodzielnym organem sceny metalowej lat zerowych. Nagrywany na Florydzie album idealnie wpisał się w standardy metalcore’u, zabierając się za niego od innej strony. Bo Matt Heafy pamięta w tym wszystkim o idolach. Dlatego styl grupy nie był zbudowany wyłącznie na nowościach, a wielokrotnie zakręcał w thrash czy nawet klasyczne heavy, proponując niejako hybrydę starego ze współczesnym. I proszę bardzo, to wciąż działa, zwłaszcza koncertowo, piękna sprawa.
